Community & Cohesion:

For generations we have lived in communities.
Since the industrial revolution and subsequent globalisation, geographic mobility for finding work has brought about the rupture of many of these communities in which different generations lived together and helped each other mutually.
Personal, couple and family care as well as maternity and child rearing have been affected by these changes.
Without ignoring the intrinsic dysfunctionalities that these communities had and still have, they provided identity, cohesion and individual and group support.
As a society we have created other structures of support: non-profit organisations, clubs and different types of support groups, but there isn’t a global consciousness of the vital importance that these groups have as a support network.
Individualism and competitiveness as social values have been making inroads in contrast to the values of mutual help, care, collaboration and sense of individual identity within a group of piers.
An isolated and disconnected individual without a family, a group reference and a coherent support network can often feel lost.
